Watching English Videos Isn't the Same as Learning English
"My child watches English YouTube all day — isn't that enough?" The answer is more complicated than it looks.
The difference between passive and active
When a child watches YouTube, their brain is in passive-receiving mode. They understand (sometimes), but they aren't producing language. To speak, write, and think in English, you need to practice actively producing the language.
What actually helps from YouTube
Watching with English subtitles (not Hebrew!) helps connect the written word to the spoken word. Channels like Peppa Pig for young kids or TED-Ed for teens are excellent.
What's missing
Interaction, answering questions, error correction, writing, and speaking. All of these require a teacher — not a screen.
