English Proficiency Levels, Explained

English proficiency levels are divided according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) — here they are.

A1: Beginner

Can understand and use basic phrases for everyday needs, introduce themselves and others, ask and answer simple personal questions, and interact simply if the other person speaks slowly and clearly.

A2: Elementary

Can understand frequently used expressions related to personal topics (shopping, family, local geography), communicate in simple tasks requiring direct exchange of information, and describe aspects of their background and immediate needs.

B1: Intermediate

Can deal with everyday situations while traveling in English-speaking areas, produce simple connected text on familiar topics, and describe experiences, events, dreams, and plans.

B2: Upper-Intermediate

Can understand the main ideas of complex texts, interact fluently and spontaneously, and produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects.

C1: Advanced

Can understand demanding texts and recognize implicit meaning, express themselves fluently and spontaneously, and use language flexibly for social, academic, and professional purposes.

C2: Proficient

Can understand virtually everything heard or read, summarize information from different sources, and express themselves spontaneously, fluently, and precisely even in very complex situations.

How we group students

At Bright Stars English we group classes into three main levels: Beginners (A1-A2), Intermediate (B1-B2), and Advanced (C1-C2). The pace and curriculum are still tailored to each student individually, even within a group. Moving between levels depends on periodic assessments, teacher feedback, and — for students under 18 — a conversation with the parent or guardian.
