Helping Your Child Practice English at Home — 7 Simple Ideas
What happens between lessons, at home, can double the pace of progress.
1. Switch the language on screens
One simple step that surrounds the child with English for hours a day, without them even noticing.
2. Short books at the right level
Oxford Reading Tree or Usborne Readers books are excellent. 10 minutes of reading before bed works wonders.
3. Duolingo — five minutes a day
Not a substitute for lessons, but as a short daily practice — excellent. Kids love the gamification.
4. A new word a day on the fridge
A note with an English word and its translation. By year's end — 365 new words. Another option: 7 English labels on things around the house, and at the end of the week you quiz each other on what you remember.
5. Familiar movies in English with subtitles
Movies the child already knows in Hebrew — let them watch in English. Knowing the story helps comprehension.
6. Card games
Uno, Memory, Bingo — play any of them and require game vocabulary to be said in English.
7. Ask what they learned today
Every evening: "Tell me one thing in English you learned this week." It encourages review and builds confidence.
At Bright Stars English we give parents more tips every month.
